Knowing your rights at a DUI checkpoint

2013-07-15

A 21-year-old Tennessee man released a video on YouTube that has gone viral (and has since been made private) showing him trying to navigate a DUI checkpoint. In the video one can see officers discussing how the man had done nothing wrong while they were searching his vehicle.

CBS12 discusses the rights of citizens when confronted with a DUI checkpoint with Ellen Roberts, a Florida prosecutor of 30 years in Palm Beach County. Roberts says if you are approaching a DUI checkpoint, the law says you can legally turn around and go the other way and avoid the roadblock and the police cannot chase you or go after you. But once you enter the checkpoint, in Florida you have to do as police ask.
